What is an R1 Worker?
The Direct R1 Scheme was implemented in 2015 to provide another alternative pathway for the industry to upgrade its construction workers.
It allows those who pass the Skills Evaluation Certificate (Knowledge), SEC(K), test at a higher skill level, and draw a fixed monthly salary of $1,600 or more, to be considered as R1 (Higher Skilled) workers; under the Ministry of Manpower Tiered-Levy Scheme.
Eligibility
This CoreTrade scheme is available for both local Singaporean workers and foreign workers with relevant years of experience working in the construction industry in Singapore.
CoreTrade provides a platform to retain better and more experienced personnel by providing a clear career progression path and recognition
Pathways To Become An R1 Worker
There are 6 current upgrading pathways listed by the BCA. All pathways aim to support improvement and continuously upgrade different aspects of the built environment sector.
Some of the most common pathways include:
CoreTrade Scheme: Help the built environment sector build a core group of competent and experienced workers in key construction trades and supervisory roles
Multi-Skilling Scheme: Improving productivity by developing a pool of experienced workers that are competent to carry out more than one type of work task on-site
Skills Evaluation Certificate (Knowledge) (SEC(K)): Aims to raise the skills, productivity, and safety in the construction sector.
Certificate of Successful Completion (CSC): For crane operation licensing purposes, including Mobile Crane Operation, Crawler Crane Operation, and Mini Crane Operation.

COURSE CONTENTS
This course aims to provide trainees with knowledge and skills in painting. They will be trained to recognize different types of paint, techniques of application, and proper handling of painting tools and equipment. More importantly, trainees will be taught to practice good painting habits and worksite safety relating to painting.
Trainers of different nationalities (Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Indian) will be present to assist workers during the training.

COURSE CONTENTS
This course consists of practical and theory training sessions covering the following topics:
Components covered in this course include columns, beams, slabs, staircases, refuse chutes, facades, gable-end walls, and space-adding items.
SUSPENDED CEILING INSTALLATION (ACOUSTICAL)
COURSE CONTENTS
These are practical and theory-oriented courses. The lessons comprise workshop practicals, classroom lectures, and video instructions. It teaches the general knowledge of ceiling and drywall installation as well as the practical preparation of suspension and grid components, fabrication of grid work, and installation of ceiling panels. Trainees will be assessed by BCA.
Trainers of different nationalities (Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Indian) will be present to assist workers during the training.
